While Chernobylite might share some DNA with GSC Game World's FPS masterpiece, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (FPS elements, mutants, weird nuclear anomalies, grim weather and, of course, their location), it has very much evolved into its own radioactive beast. You play as physicist Igor Khymynyuk, one of the scientists who was there on the fateful day that Chernobyl had its meltdown. His wife went missing that day and now, 30 years on, she has begun appearing to him in visions. Igor returns to Chernobyl to search for her, finding that a mysterious new substance called Chernobylite has begun appearing in the Zone and a private military company called NAR is surrounding the area. What follows is a battle for control of the Zone and this new element, playing out in an expansive FPS with a base building meta game and emergent gameplay elements. The basic structure has you running around five different areas within the Zone, completing missions, gathering resources and building to a massive raid on the Chernobyl plant. As you change, so will the environment. NAR troops will become better equipped, the mutants populating the Zone will sprout off into new, more numerous species and the ever-present threat of radiation will grow. Throughout this process you'll gather a team and build your base, using it as a site to gather your strength and craft new kit to help you on your quest. It's as much about exploration as it is about getting into (and out of) firefights, but the constant presence of enemies keeps the crank turning on Chernobylite's tension. Horror, love, survival, conspiracy - it's all ready for you to untangle in Chernobylite.
