For many, the best things about the BBC's digital channels are Claudia Winkleman, arty European cinema and the Blobs. You know, BBC3's idents? They're great! They should have their own show! For some though, the interactivity is everything, and there is no programme more interactive than Fightbox. It first came to our screens in 2003 and became an instant hit, with its invitation to create and nurture your very own weapon of mass destruction. In a (vaguely) human form too. Come early 2004, and Fightbox makes the leap to PC and console, making every day a day of possible/probable mayhem. There are four different tournaments to play through in Fightbox: Novice, Amateur, Pro and Ultimate. Of course, each one is progressively more difficult than the last. Only by succeeding in each tournament will you earn the right to compete in the final tournament. And, as a bonus, there are several extra unlockable games as you progress through Fightbox. Within each level there are several different tournaments. These consist of a number of Eliminators followed by a Showdown. Prize money is awarded for winning tournaments, and can be used to upgrade and maintain your warrior as well as paying for the tournament entrance fees. To unlock a new level of tournament, you must win all tournaments in your current level. Then comes the Grading Match - an Extreme Showdown against a higher level of warrior. Only by defeating this opponent will you gain access to the next level. Games in the hub of the Fightbox are pretty much what you would expect from the genre, with names such as Demolition, Duel, Panic, and Showdown. Basically, it's all about how strong and tough your warrior is, and keeping it that way by means of proper maintenance and upgrades. A bit like Gran Turismo but instead of shiny metal, you're dressed as a member of Slipknot, or a civil servant who leads a double life...if you catch our drift. Mmm, lurex!
